Extended School Year (ESY) Services

What is ESY?
Extended School Year (ESY) is specialized instruction and related services that are part of a child’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP). At Hiawatha Academies, ESY services are offered during summer break.

Who is eligible for ESY?
ESY eligibility is determined by an individual scholar’s needs based upon data collected during the school year and is documented in the scholar’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP). ESY services are provided to a scholar during a break in the normal school year (such as the long summer break). ESY is not the same as summer school. School districts have the option to offer summer school to scholars, while ESY is required to be offered to eligible special education scholars.

Families are generally notified during IEP meetings if their student qualifies. If your child is eligible for ESY services, you will be contacted by a member of your child’s IEP team. Transportation, breakfast, and lunch are provided to all scholars attending.
