Hiawatha Free Food
What: Every Meal is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission to fight child hunger through community and school partnerships. They strive to make a difference in children’s lives by specifically focusing on food gaps - the times when children aren’t at school to access meal programs. Every Meal supports families with programming over the weekends, extended school breaks, and summer.
Who can apply: Anyone; all students are welcome and encouraged to apply.
How: Please speak with your campus social worker for more information on how to enroll in the program. Free for all families and there are no qualifications required. No contact information is collected during the process and families can choose to participate in the program at any time through the school year. Students who do participate will receive food bags each week, typically on Thursdays or Fridays.

Classes will run from January 18th to May 31st
When: Mondays and Fridays (Priority is given to those who can attend 2 days per week)

Chemical Health, Use and Abuse Information
Hiawatha Academies is a Drug-Free School. This notice to families/guardians is given to provide you with information about our scholar health and safety efforts.

General Information/Resources:
- National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA): Offers research, resources, and educational materials on drug abuse and addiction.
- Partnership to End Addiction: Provides tools, support, and resources for families dealing with substance use.
Talking About Substance Abuse with Your Student:
- Start the Talk: A resource to help parents and caregivers navigate conversations about substance use with their children.
- Above the Influence: Empower young people to make positive choices and resist substance use.
Helpful Vaping Websites/Resources:
- The Real Cost: A campaign by the FDA to educate teens on the dangers of smoking and vaping.
- Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids: Provides information on the impact of tobacco and vaping, with a focus on youth prevention.
Taking a mental health approach to prevention of substance abuse
There is a correlation between mental health and substance abuse in teens, and access to mental health resources and education/workshops provides a basis for addressing substance abuse at its root.

Hiawatha has chemical and mental health teaching standards at the middle and high school level that promote healthy life choices including use/abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. We also provide family workshops on said issues. We urge families to join these events when available. Middle schools HCP-K 7th and 8th grade opted in for Know the Truth Program for prevention learning and have individualized support for scholars as needed. HCP-N scholars have access to social workers for identified cases of chemical abuse. Scholars are also educated on this topic in advisory. High school 9th and 10th-grade HCHS partners with Mental Health by NAMI and have completed the Chemical Dependency Psychoeducation learning. Each grade level started Mental Health 101 Training on November 14, 2022.

Hiawatha Academies Substance Use Policy |
According to our board policy, Hiawatha is a drug-free school. scholars may not have in their possession, use, or be under the influence of alcohol, tobacco or other chemicals not prescribed by their healthcare provider while at school or at school functions, regardless of location. A scholar who violates the terms of this policy shall be subject to discipline in accordance with the school’s discipline policy. Such discipline may in certain cases include suspension or expulsion from school. Definitions Request/Solicitation is seeking an illegal drug on school grounds or during campus school activities (including while taking school transportation) Sale/Distribution is when a student is found selling, distributing, or seeking to sell an illegal drug on school grounds or during off-campus school activities (including while taking school transportation) In the school context illegal drugs includes

Chemical Health Services |
Our schools have a pre-assessment team that identifies scholars who have chemical-health use or abuse-related issues. This includes scholars who are affected by the chemical use and abuse of others. This team may provide the scholar and/or the scholar’s parents/ guardians with information about the school or community services available to help with chemical health issues. All reports of suspected, inappropriate chemical use or abuse are given to this team, who assist the principal in determining the correct course of action.

Public Assistance
Everyone has the right to apply for public assistance. Public assistance is available to persons who do not have the financial resources to pay for necessities such as food, housing, and medical care. There are different kinds of assistance, and each program has its own requirements and limits on income/assets.

- to choose where and with whom you live (with certain limitations)

- General Assistance
When families are in a financial crisis that poses a direct threat to the physical health or safety of a child younger than 18, the Emergency Assistance program can help by providing short-term aid. You must attend an interview to receive benefits. Services include:- Housing costs such as rent payments, damage deposits, home repairs, utility bills.
- Foreclosure prevention, moving expenses, transportation for homeless families.
- Additional food support for people who have specific dietary needs (special diets)

Expedited Appeal
