Join our Family Connection Groups!
Family Connection Groups at Hiawatha Academies are designed to break down the isolation that families from communities underrepresented in our student body may experience by building community and connections with families from similar cultural backgrounds. Each group will serve as a space for families to connect, discuss issues related to their school experiences, share resources, and support one another. The groups are designed to facilitate connection and discussion. Our hope is that the Family Connection Groups will lead to collective action for more equitable practices at Hiawatha.
Latinx Families Against Racism Group
Hiawatha has a very large Latinx student majority. Over the years there have been lots of incidents of racially-based harassment/ bullying and we have lost many African American and East African families. We want to engage families from the Latinx majority in making Hiawatha Academies a place that is more welcoming and inclusive for families from all backgrounds, races, and ethnicities. In this group, families will build community and connections with other Latinx families who are committed to learning about the history of anti-black discrimination and how it shows up in our families and communities today. We will discuss how to talk to our kids about race and racially-based discrimination. Our hope is that this will lead to collective action for more equitable practices at Hiawatha.
Each group will be co-facilitated by at least 3 staff or family members. We will hold monthly meetings (via Zoom) beginning in December. Please contact Shannon Gavin or one of the other facilitators if you’re interested in learning more, or if you would like to recommend families who may be interested in joining.
